The Science of Prayer.

The first thing we need to consider is what a prayer is. What it is NOT is a pious pleading with God to give you this or that. Prayer is your command to the universe. Whatsoever you command is fulfilled for that is the sole purpose of the universe; to serve your every wish.

Whatsoever you experience is the result of your decisions, your expectations, your feelings and your centering. What does this mean? It means that if the life that you are living does not please you, it is, nonetheless, that for which you prayed; that which you commanded. It means, further, that mere words alone are almost without meaning. If they are contradicted by your feelings or your expectation then the words are completely meaningless and with no effect whatsoever. An effective prayer can only come from the whole of you. Your words, your emotions, your feelings, your expectations must all become one within your heart so that a coherent command can be given.

Why aren't we told this in The Bible? Well, if we go back to The Bible as it was before the convention of bishops under the emperor Constantine we find a great many things which were no longer present after this convention which Constantine called to re-edit The Bible and to determine what would and would not be taught. Amongst these things is how to pray. Two of the four necessary steps to creating an effective prayer were simply removed at Constantine's behest. Why? Well, if it were to become general knowledge how to have everything that you wanted simply by giving a coherent command from your heart, where would be the incentive to obey either emperor or bishop? If, however, prayers are almost never "answered" then you are, "obviously", not sufficiently worthy and need to receive guidance from a priesthood who are appointed by "god" to deliver "his" word to you, including "his" requirement that you obey "his" appointed emperor/king/etc.: Seems to me that Constantine and the bishops cooked themselves up a cosy little deal in Constantinople.

We have the great good fortune that some of the pre-Constantine texts have survived. Best known are the Dead Sea Scrolls and the Nag Hammadi Library. Here we find a great deal of "lost" knowledge and wisdom. Amongst this is the missing half of the instructions from Jesus on how to create an effective prayer.

Here are the four parts of the basic prayer instructions. The first and the fourth you will find in most editions of The Bible. The second and third steps were only rediscovered in the last century and are still not generally known. The missing two steps are the reason why most prayers don't achieve anything.

Whatsoever ye ask the Father in my name, he will give it to you*

Ask without hidden motive (judgement) and be surrounded by your answer **

Be enveloped by what you desire that your gladness be full**

Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name.*

** Neil Douglas-Klotz, Prayers of the Cosmos: Meditations on the Aramaic words of Jesus pages 86 & 87. Secrets of the Lost Mode of Prayer pages 166 & 167.

Do you see the enormous difference between the full version and the "official" version? Do you understand now why your prayers never seem to work and why most people just don't bother with prayer?

It is not sufficient to repeat a form of words although even here precision is required. The missing essential part is the instruction to feel that your prayer has already been fulfilled. This is the language that the universe understands and it will rush to fulfil your commands. The words from your head and the feelings in your abdomen much come together and be one in your heart. It is solely your heart which has the ability to speak to the universe. Both direction (conscious choice) and power (the feeling of fulfilment) are needed to give a coherent command which the universe can follow.

It's not just the words which you say; you must also feel that your command has already been fulfilled. That is how to give a prayer both form and power.

The are some preparations useful for prayer. As, usually, alone the form and not the not the meaning is taught these are almost always misunderstood.

The first is a mudra: There is no english word for this so I have to use the Sanskrit one. A mudra is a closed circle. There are very many of them used in Ayur Vedic Healing, Tai Chi and similar studies. This particular mudra is the mudra for stillness. All body activity is reduced to minimal level so that maximal concentration upon the task in hand (the prayer) is helped.

All fingertips are together and the palms flat against each other.

This, however, is a false "mudra": It doesn't heal, it creates and/or intensifies guilt feelings and should never be used.

In Islam, Hindu and some other ways it is usual for the practitioner to place his/her forehead onto the floor. This is not because God "requires" obeisance but simply and very practically because this both improves the circulation to the brain and relaxes the neck and shoulders and thus aids clarity and concentration.

Similarly, praying upon the knees has absolutely nothing to do with obeisance but is a position which automatically brings the spine erect. This aids concentration and clarity.

One can achieve the same effect by sitting upon the front edge of a hard chair and placing both feet flat upon the floor.

To the prayer itself:

What you first need to be clear about is exactly what a prayer is for.

The very last thing it could ever be is an offering.

A prayer is an order, an instruction that something come to pass. Even more important is to note that you can never, under any circumstances give an instruction for anyone else. This is not simply forbidden, it is actually impossible! The universe is not structured that way. It would be just like asking for water to flow uphill. The creation of a new universe would be necessary to achieve this.

Nor is a prayer a request; there is no plea, no bargaining, nothing to purchase from God. A prayer is your order. The precision and clarity with which you give your order determines how accurately and quickly it can be carried out.

How is your order to be structured?

The first thing that you need is to select the words. So few words as possible and use simple, clear words. The focus is better so. Know precisely what it is that you want, no ifs and buts, no prevarications, no bargain pleas but a clear precise order.

The next thing you need to know is that the prayer has already been fulfilled. It is the feeling of joy and thankfulness in the fulfilment which gives a prayer power. The words alone are almost without meaning and consequently without effect.

The third and final step is to give your command clearly and precisely.:

Close your eyes. Place your hands in the stillness mudra. Spine and head erect. Feel the joy of receiving your gift and simultaneously speak your order three or seven times. Then stand up and go about you daily business.

An example of an effective prayer would be:

Dear Goddess, Thank you for letting me study poverty. I am now ready to experience knowing it's opposite and will receive your precise instructions to create immediate wealth at 9.12 this evening. Amen.

Simple, clear and precise and, therefore, effective.

You cannot pray that someone else be helped. If you want to help them, then you pray for the ability and wherewithal to do so. (try it, it's fun!)
